When online casino games came into being along with the internet in the mid 1990s they were obviously going to be a full-on success, but it is difficult to say if anybody could have truthfully predicted the extent of their success. The online casino games drew and still do draw very much on the land based originals, and you will today see blackjack tables and roulette wheels online that are so realistic looking you will think they are real. The software that has developed to cope with the growing needs and demands of online casino game players, has come to provide all of the features that one would find in a land based casino and more.

The biggest difference of course between the land based and the online casino is the location. The online casino allows you to play from you living room, your office, even whilst on the train commuting. This ease of access allows for play anytime of the day or night with no effort, but it has also opened up the world of gaming to people who would probably never actually make it to a land based casino. In terms of the actual game play, online casinos are a lot faster than land based casino play, meaning that you get a lot more play for your time. Additionally, online casinos will often offer such features as auto-play; and software that enables you to look back over hands and moves. Online casino games are often more diverse than those offered by a land based casino also, and will be updated more regularly.

So we now know what online casino games are, how they differ from land based casinos, and some of their advantages. But what are the most popular ones in both online and offline settings? What are their aims? What are their rules? Well, the most popular casino games, excluding poker games, in both land based and internet casinos are Slots, Blackjack, Video Poker, Keno, Roulette, and Craps, and it is precisely these games that this section is going to introduce you to. There will be slight differences in the practicalities of play depending on if you're playing in a land based or online casino; however the principles of the games and their play will remain the same.

Slots - Slots can come in 3, 5 or 7 reel formats, and are a game of chance by which the reels spin to determine a result. Each of the reels will have a sequence of pictures or motifs on them and certain combinations of these pictures will result in a win, the amount of which will depend on the specific combination, and its likelihood of appearing. Slots may also be referred to as video slots or fruit machines, and will come with different max. coin possibilities and different numbers of paylines – this will all be explained later.

Blackjack - Blackjack is one of the oldest casino games known and is played at a table with between 1 and 8 decks of cards. Each player is playing against the dealer only, and thus is not interested in what the other players are doing. The basic aim of the game of blackjack is to get closer to the number 21 with the cards you are dealt than the dealer does, without going over. You bet on your perceived likelihood to do this. This is a game of mathematical calculation that in some casinos actually has no house edge.

Video Poker - Video poker is a kind of hybrid between poker and slots. A completely automated game, the aim of video poker is to create poker hands as per a regular poker game. Video poker is always a 5 card draw game meaning that you have one swapping round, but it will come in a number of forms, for example Jacks of Better, or Deuces Wild. As it is just you playing on a machine, you are not playing against anyone and thus don't have any thing to beat – this is where it is more like slots than poker; payouts are based on creating poker hands and will be rewarded accordingly, i.e. lowest payout for a pair, highest for Royal Flush.

Roulette - Roulette is for many the signature game of the casino industry; its fun, fast, exciting, and entirely a game of chance. A wheel with 37 or 38 numbered pockets, depending on the variety, is spun and a ball is dropped into it. The players must bet on where the ball will land. This bet can take the form of a specific number bet, a group number bet, or several other options.

Craps - Craps is a dice game that enables a large number of players to play in one game. Played at a sunken table, different players will get an opportunity to be the "shooter", that means to roll the dice. The shooter makes the first bet and other players in, the simplest form, then bet whether the shooter will win or loose. A win is by getting a natural or by matching the point; a loose is by getting craps or a 7 before the point is met – this will all be explained.

Keno - Keno is a game with its roots in the orient but has found quite a following in the western world as a lottery alternative.  A Keno Card with numbers 1-80 will be available, and on this card you will mark some of the numbers; usually around 15 but it can be more or it can be less. When all bets have been made, the 80 keno balls, numbered 1-80 will be moved around via air inside the keno goose, or box, and 20 are randomly picked. The winnings depend on how many of your chosen numbers were picked out of the Keno Goose.
