A casino bonus, or cash incentive, is the means that online casinos use to encourage players to become members of their casino. A casino bonus or promotion will usually come in the form of some kind of cash give-away but the means in which this cash is distributed can take on a number of different forms. The sum of the cash give-away will vary greatly between different casinos, and hence it is often a good idea to look at the other features of the casino, and the limits applied by the casino before choosing a casino on the basis of the sign up promo. The two main types of promotions offered are sign-up bonuses, and on-going bonuses or freebies;  The main different forms of bonuses therefore can be summarised as deposit match bonuses, no deposit bonuses, free spin/free time bonuses, and monthly bonuses. However, it should be noted that all freebies given by the site, can be considered as a promo, and should be taken into account when picking a casino.

Some of the casino promotions are worth a considerable amount of money, and hence each online casino must take measures in order to protect itself from players who may take advantage of the bonus they offer. The form in which this protection takes is known as wagering requirements. A wagering requirement is the amount that a casino will require you to gamble of your own money before you are able to withdraw the funds you got from a bonus. For example, if a casino offers you a $100 welcome bonus, instead of just giving you the cash that you could then withdraw and never return to that casino again, the casino will set a wagering requirement of, for example 20x. A 20x wagering requirement means that in order for you to withdraw that $100 that you were given from the bonus, you must play 20 x $100 of your own money first; thus, before you can withdraw that $100 you must first wager through $2,000 of your own funds. The wagering requirements will differ between casinos and from game to game, and each casino will detail what its wagering requirements are.

We already said that there are four main types of bonuses that might be offered, each of which will be subject to wagering requirements. Here's an explanation of each of those types of bonuses:

Deposit Match Bonuses

A deposit match bonus is the most common type of sign-up bonus. A deposit match bonus will be presented on a site's homepage usually with the largest sum that it's possible to receive from this promo. The deposit match bonus works in terms of a percentage. The percentage could be anything, but is nearly always between 50% and 200%, and is most commonly 100%. This type of promo will equal the amount that you deposit according the percentage of the bonus. If for example, you make a first deposit of $100, in a casino that is offering a 100% deposit match you will end up with $200 – that's your $100 plus the $100 that they matched you. If you were depositing $100 at a site that offered a 50% deposit match bonus however you would end up with only $150. This type of bonus promotion will always come with a limit both for minimum and maximum deposits, and the sum advertised will be the maximum deposit. For example, when you see a site that says it will give you $500 in a 100% deposit match bonus, this means that they will match any deposit you make 100% up to the value of $500. The final thing to know about deposit match bonuses is that whilst some casinos will offer it just on the first deposit you make, some will offer it on the first 2, 3, 5, or even 10 deposits; some will even offer it on top-up deposits.

No Deposit Bonuses

A no deposit bonus is an unusual type of bonus and shouldn't be confused with the Free Time Bonuses. A no deposit bonus is a promotion that gives customers cash or credit simply for playing. This means that it isn't linked to how much money you've spent on the site in a particular time frame, but rather is simply something nice that the site wants to do for its customers. No deposit bonuses come in the form of codes that can be found either on the site itself or from online casino forums. This casino code should be entered into the site and you will be credited with the free cash. Casinos offer this type of bonus as a means of reward and keeping customers happy.  As with other types of promotions, the no deposit bonus will come with wagering requirements.

Free Spins/Free Time Bonuses

This type of promotion can be found in the form or a welcome bonus or as a members' treat. When it comes as a welcome bonus, the casino will give you a certain amount of money and a certain amount of time to play with. What ever your profits are from that time period will be credited to your real money account, and that sum is your welcome bonus. Thus with the free time bonuses, you get to determine what the sign-up bonus you receive is. Most casinos that offer this type of bonus will often provide it without the need to make a deposit first; however, should you make a deposit they will usually also offer you a cash match bonus in addition. A free time bonus or a free spins bonus may also be offered by a casino to its customers at various other times, simply as an incentive to play more, or to remain loyal to the site.

Monthly Bonuses

Monthly bonuses are a broad term that can refer to a number of promotions and freebies. You may find a monthly bonus that rewards your deposits each month with a deposit bonus match, or may reward deposits made with particular payment methods. You will also find, individual freebies such as prize-draws and give-aways offered by the site, or free-spin tournaments being offered at various stages in the month. The monthly bonuses, or ongoing bonuses as they may be referred to, are often more important than the sign up bonuses, as these are the ones that are going to bring you money and freebies over the course of your use of the site, rather than just the beginning of it as a sign-up promotion does.
